Just fifteen miles from Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, lies the municipality of Haina, considered one of the most contaminated spots on earth. More than 100 factories and industries exist side by side with a population of more than 150,000, many of whom suffer from respiratory, digestive, and cutaneous ailments as well as anemia and learning disabilities. Far from being a Caribbean paradise, this coastal zone has been labeled the “Dominican Chernobyl,” and many fear industrial accidents that could devastate entire communities. This film exposes the gravity of the contamination, the clamor of the affected residents and the inability of the authorities to find a solution to this environmental disaster.
